Witchcraft from the Ground Up

Witchcraft from the Ground Up was hosted on the now-defunct Why Wiccans Suck website. It is one of the most comprehensive online tutorials on how to go about achieving real magic. I have put it here because I love it so much and want it to be available to people who ask me about magic, but I did not write one single word of it.

Preface

Witchcraft
from the ground up
Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will.
–Aleister Crowley
Introduction
This course is quite possibly the largest beginner’s tutorial in witchcraft available on the internet. It is geared toward the uninformed novice, and yet it encompasses skills ranging from the basics up to some of the more advanced magics, such as creating a familiar and summoning spirits. Therefore, this course is huge — even though there’s no frivolous beating around the bush as in other tutorials I’ve seen (“the history of witchcraft,” “list of traditional holidays,” “how to make your own candles,” etc). This will probably upset quite a few people who’ve devoted their lives to making hardcore, practical witchcraft as shrouded in secrecy (and as hard to learn) as possible.
The course must be read as outlined below in order to learn the skills explained within. Skipping over a chapter means missing information needed to understand the next chapter. I suggest you bookmark this site now, as you’ll need to spend many days reading over the course and doing the exercises. Plus, you may need some of the spells and drawings within for reference, later. If you’re new to witchcraft, I suggest reading the FAQ (at the bottom of this page) first.
Some people will find this course entertaining; others, enlightening; others, infuriating; and still others may write it off as the delusions of someone who’s studied the silly nuances of occultism for far too long. I am happy for all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
about this course
Q. Isn’t witchcraft evil?
A. Witchcraft is just as evil as a butcher knife. It’s just a tool; the morals lie in how you decide to use it.
There are no books to sign in blood to get such power — in fact, some people are born with the ability, and use witchcraft everyday without even realizing it.
Q. What sort of person can learn witchcraft?
A. I’m not going to give you the usual happy-go-lucky answer that “anyone can” — it takes a personality with an open mind, curiosity, creativity, and lots and lots of patience. You aren’t going to see any results on your first day. In addition, contrary to anything else you might have read about witchcraft (visualize this and chant that), this course will bring you some intense, sometimes frightening, results. Consult with your doctor before trying any of the exercises herein.
Q. Which tradition of witchcraft does this course teach? Druidry, shamanism, voodoo, etc.?
A. This course is all-purpose. What is explained within is the skeletal core of energy manipulation, gathered from several faiths and stripped of the usual meanderings and religious trappings (although, belief in a soul is somewhat helpful). It’s left to you to decide where your religion fits in.
Q. Who are you, anyway?
A. I am a reclusive, spiritual female who has been studying and practicing occultism for about 10 years. I don’t claim to be an expert, just a scholar. If you’d like to get in touch with me, you can write to [redacted for spambots] …but realize that, as much as I would like to, I cannot help every beginner individually. That’s what this course is for.
Q. What can magic do for me?
A. The short answer is, it can help you achieve many a goal, by shifting circumstance in your favor.
The long answer illustrates this with some possible examples:
  1. Manipulation of…
    • People. For example: If you really want that promotion, give your boss a subconscious shove.
    • Energy. If you’re getting “bad vibes” from someone, you can create a psychic shield.
  2. Exploration of…
    • Yourself and others. Tap into your ESP.
    • The Astral Plane. Why daydream about faraway places when you could visit them?
  3. Divination of…
    • The unknown. Where did you lose that watch, anyway?
    • Ghosts and spirits. Ever wonder where the words come from on an ouija board?
Q. Will I be able to levitate and teleport and stuff?
A. While most “witches” I’ve met would be quick to snicker and say “No!”, I’ll take the informed liberty of adding “…not yet.” The paths to learn these abilities have been taught for thousands of years in the East, but only after years of discipline and spiritual study is it supposed to be mentally possible. Completing this course is a great start, but it’s no substitute for lifelong research.
Q. Why should I believe in any of this?
A. Ah, skepticism, the most practical of all virtues. In answer to your question — you shouldn’t believe anything I say. After all, this course is just an entertaining look into some of the theories of metaphysics. But if you want to try anything out to see for yourself, neither the author or nor Angelfire will be held responsible.
[And while we're on the subject of disclaimers, I'll repeat that you need to consult your doctor to determine if your mind and body are healthy enough to experiment with this sort of thing; also, the author and Angelfire are not responsible for the results of any spell you might cast; and, be careful with fire if you use candles and such; ground yourself and quit if a ritual gets too intense; etc.]
Q. Can I use witchcraft for personal gain?
A. Read a few pre-New-Age books on the occult (at least 30 years old), and you’ll realize that it’s absurd to think otherwise. After all, witchcraft originated from ancient desires for such things as wealth, power, and pleasure, not just for spiritual exploration.
Q. What are the consequences of witchcraft?
A. After hearing dozens of “monkey’s paw”-type stories as a child, you’ve been trained to think that selfish people will be punished by some sort of subtle, clever twist of fate. If only reality was that efficient — we wouldn’t need prisons! In truth, magic is only self-malicious if you expect it to be (just as government spies don’t follow you around unless you’re paranoid-delusional). Still, if you go out looking for trouble, you’re likely to find it. My advice is to act as a witch as you should act anyway — with maturity and respect.
Q. Where are the spells? If this is a tutorial on witchcraft then there should be spells!
A. If you want to be spoon-fed quick-fix spells without understanding how they work, then this tutorial is not for you. If you’ve got the time and patience to complete this course, though, you should be able to invent your own spells just as the ancients did to begin with, with the added benefit of understanding what will make them powerful.
Q. How long will it take me to learn this stuff?
A. I dedicated about an hour every night to awakening my ESP, and managed it in one month. For you the time may be longer or shorter, depending on your attitudes toward it. After that, it’s quite addictive, and you should get the basic knack for it after about half a dozen thorough spells. Wait at least a day or two between each chapter, however, so you can try the exercises.
